I absolutely love sloppy joes. Growing up they were one of my favorite foods. I remember we were so poor one time when I was about 8 I scraped together my last 2 dollars and went to the store to buy a can of sloppy joe mix thinking it came with the meat so that our family could have a nice dinner, otherwise we would go without food that night. My mom burst out into tears, she was so touched. Me…..I was brokenhearted I couldn’t get my sloppy joes.
Flash forward 20+ years later and I still remember that moment every time I tough a can of the sloppy joe mix. Ahhh memories. So anyway. As my husband and I are looking to be more plant based, I was looking for way to still have my sloppy joes and eat them too – without having cow mixed in. Enter the Meatless grounds. These things are a lifesaver. Gardein’s are vegan, however I’m not sure about other brands but all are meat free and mimic the texture of ground beef. A bag of the meatless crumbles in hand, I set out to make the below meal.
Vegan sloppy joes
- ½ pound Gardein meatless grounds (or the meatless grounds of your choice) With Gardein ½ pound is the equivalent of 1 pound ground beef.
- 1 can sloppy joe / manwich mix of your choice. Hunt’s ™ manwich mix is fully vegan. 1
- ½ Onion, chopped
- 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
- 1 Tbsp. worcestershire sauce
- Vegan buns (Cobblestone Mill, Arnold, and Nature’s Own all carry vegan breads)
What to do:
Sautee the grounds with the onion and garlic following the instructions on the package.
Add in the sloppy joe mix and heat until warmed thoroughly.
Place the mixture on the buns and voila! Vegan sloppy joes that are just downright awesome. Experiment with adding seasonings but for me – it was just right.
