So I have a wonderful trait called ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I say wonderful only half sarcastically, because there are so many strengths associated with the disorder that I love. However, like most people with ADHD, the one task that I have the worst issue with is organization and cleanliness. Organizing with ADHD is imperative and something I have yet to master. I have piles of stuff in every room! I live out of laundry baskets, always lose important information, and housework just seems to pile into an unmanageable mess which creates an environment of chaos that exacerbates the issue. Oh and I’m un-medicated! However, I am hoping to stay un-medicated as long as possible and to do that I am working on small techniques to help create habits and make my life more manageable. One technique that I am starting to implement which has had remarkable results so far is what I call The Three Action Rule. In every room in my house, thank God I have a small apartment, I manage to take three small quick actions to improve that room or my organization.
For example, last night when I was downstairs I lightly mopped, put away one item that I was supposed to take upstairs 2 months ago, and wiped down my small bookcase. In my room I picked up all trash off the floor, picked my dirty clothes off the floor and put them in the proper baskets, and I put away my shoes instead of leaving them in the middle of the floor for my husband to trip over. Even at work I took three actions to clean my desk. Normally I would try to do everything at once and I become so overwhelmed, get frustrated, and then I would quit. However with them being small action items I have been able to keep them up and I’m trying to create overall habits of being organized and not so much living like a bachelor college student lol. I’m slowly seeing my home transform into the home I always wanted it to be! Now there are some rules, I can’t do the same actions every night and I can’t count something as small as moving a pen or pencil. It has to be meaningful. But so far I haven’t had any issues!
So give it a try. And if you don’t want to do three actions, try 1 or 2. Either way, small changes will soon make a big difference.
So give it a try and let me know how it works for you! Baby steps….you can do it!
